One of the main responsibilities of the director of the pharmacy services in modern hospitals, is to develop a policy and procedures (P&P) manual which must serve the following points:

As a guide containing specific information regarding administrative and professional decisions as well as the accepted methods of implementing those decisions.

As a guide to effective and efficient provision of pharmaceutical services, for a hospital pharmacy staff.

To promote the safe, efficient and uniform performance of departmental functions by all pharmacy personnel.

The P&P manual should be updated at least on annual basis to ensure currency and conformity with new laws, rules and regulations.
